Masdache: Lava Flows, Viticulture and Festival Culture

Masdache is a wine-growing area between the municipalities of Tías and San Bartolomé. The locality extends across lava flows from the volcanic eruptions of 1730 to 1736.

Viticulture

The cultivation method used mainly in this wine-growing area is the trench system. Semicircular stone walls protect the vines from the wind. Festivals

In July, Masdache celebrates the Fiestas de Nuestra Señora de la Magdalena; the feast day is 22 July. The celebrations include the Romería homenaje al labrador de Masdache in honour of the local farmer. During this romería, participants portray returning from fieldwork and bring agricultural equipment and animals with them. At the Romería homenaje al labrador de Masdache, homemade bread from the outdoor oven, caldo de millo, papas arrugadas with cheese and freshly harvested grapes are shared.

The traditional Verbena de la Vendimia takes place as part of the Fiestas de La Magdalena in Masdache. During the Verbena de la Vendimia, participants are invited to wear creative hats related to the grape harvest. The best hat related to the grape harvest receives its weight in wine as a prize. The two event formats can be considered as different themes when planning a trip: agriculture and food on the one hand, and grape harvesting and creative hats on the other.
