Mácher – Holiday Apartment between Village Culture and Volcanic Landscapes

Mácher is a scattered village extending on both sides of the road to Yaiza; historic manor houses from the past century are still preserved there. The village scenery provides direct access to architecture, agriculture and festival culture. Building styles, water collection and cultivation history stand side by side, revealing different aspects of rural Mácher.

Culture

The ethnographic heritage of Mácher includes traditional rural architecture. It also includes water-collection structures, such as maretas and aljibes. The Ermita or Oratorio del Apóstol San Pedro was built on an estate that had been equipped with a residence and a chapel.

The Molina de Mácher is considered representative of rural or ecological tourism in Lanzarote and is of significant cultural-historical and ethnographic value. Traditional agriculture is also part of the village scenery: onions were grown north of the road, and tomatoes to the south. Thus, the preserved buildings, water tanks and cultivated areas bring together different traces of the village’s history.

Landscape

Mácher lies between the mountains of Tinasoria and Guardilama; Montaña de Guardilama is the third-highest mountain on the island. The village is known for paragliding and hang gliding. On the coast of Mácher there is also an area known as Barranco del Kikere, where naturism is practised. Its geographical position between the two mountains thus provides the landscape setting for the aerial activities mentioned.

Bodegas Timanfaya is located in Mácher, in a cave formed by lava and ash from Timanfaya. Bodegas Timanfaya offers wine-tasting courses and ecotourism experiences. Here, the volcanic materials of the cave meet the themes of wine and ecotourism at a named location.

Festivals

The Fiestas de San Pedro are Mácher’s patron saint festivities and take place at the end of June. They include traditional games such as Envite and Bola, as well as performances by local folklore groups. The late-June date connects the patron saint festivities with a clearly defined period of the annual calendar.

Wine and lemon mistela are enjoyed during the Fiestas de San Pedro. On the day of the Asadero de Jareas, mistela made by local residents is served. The festival days therefore include games, music and local drinks, as well as the special day of the Asadero de Jareas.

Getting Around

The access road to Mácher is in good condition and well signposted; there is a bus stop in the village. This provides two different transport considerations for getting there: the road connection and the available public transport service.
