Conil: Volcanic Landscape, Viticulture and Hiking Trails
Conil is one of seven settlements within the protected landscape of La Geria. In La Geria, where Conil is located, grapevines and other fruit trees are cultivated in hollows dug into the lapilli; semicircular stone walls provide protection from the wind. Conil is considered a viewpoint from which the landscape of La Geria can be seen as far as Fuerteventura.
For planning your own trip, the expansive landscape views and the form of viticulture can be considered as two distinct focal points. Conil also has numerous buildings featuring Lanzarote’s traditional architecture.
Culture and History
The local buildings include the Ermita de la Magdalena, a small private single-nave chapel from the 17th century, built onto the house of its former owners. The Ermita del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús was built in 1863 by Mariano Stinga and Andrea Rodríguez. Hanging on the altar of the Ermita del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús are an anonymous painting of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and a papier-mâché crucifix.
The Casinito de Conil is an ethnographically valuable structure with two rooms. In the past, festive dances and the game La Santa were held there; its state of preservation is average. Conil was one of the places affected by the Timanfaya eruptions from 1730 onward and partially buried by sand and rubble; at that time, the settlement had 17 inhabitants. Conil was first documented in 1618, when the settlement was described as farmland of approximately thirty fanegas.
Paths and Landscape Traces
A Vereda de Conil connects the settlement with Tías. Conil lies on both sides of the road leading from Tías to La Geria. The Conil–Montaña Negra hiking trail is a linear route of low difficulty and leads from Plaza de Conil to Montaña Negra. The hiking trail begins in Conil next to the church and the Centro Cultural.
The trail passes through the El Taro de Testeina winery; an above-ground archaeological site is located on its grounds. On the grounds of El Taro de Testeina stands a semicircular structure made of layers of stones, rising in a vault up to a roof. The hiking trail reaches a volcanic lava flow on the western slope of Montaña de Testeina through vineyards. Old stone walls beneath the lava flows near El Taro de Testeina indicate that structures already existed there before the 18th-century eruptions.
There are hiking trails on Montaña de Conil. When planning your day, you can consider the described landscape and cultural connections side by side.
