Villaverde: Volcanic Tunnel, Volcanoes and Culture

Villaverde combines impressive volcanic formations with distinctive reminders of the island’s history. Particularly unusual is the Cueva de Villaverde, a volcanic tunnel approximately 190 metres long and a monument designated nationwide as a historical-artistic heritage site.

Culture

Another cultural focal point is the Ermita de San Vicente Ferrer. In Villaverde, it is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural, or BIC for short, in the category of a monument, and has a rectangular nave. The ermita may have been built in the 18th century; this dating is expressly subject to that reservation.

Every April, the Fiestas de Villaverde are held in Villaverde, La Oliva, in honour of San Vicente Ferrer. The festivities include a church service, a procession and a large communal barbecue. The site’s cultural character therefore encompasses the building, its historical classification and its living festival tradition, without requiring these impressions to be reduced to just one attraction.

The area was reclassified as a natural monument under Canary Islands Law 12/1994 of 19 December 1994. In the centre of Villaverde, there is also Montaña Escanfraga, a large volcano reaching an elevation of 649 metres.

The landscape can therefore be viewed from different perspectives: as an extensive malpaís with its own ecosystem and as a prominent volcano within the village. Hiking and Views

The circular trail around Volcán de la Arena offers views of the northwest coast and impressive lava fields. These two viewing directions connect the island’s open horizon with the clearly visible traces of its volcanic landscape.
