A striking introduction to Cotillo is La Concha: the bay has white sand and calm turquoise water. Its natural, horseshoe-shaped reef consistently ensures low waves. The Corralitos, built by local residents from volcanic rock, can provide shelter when the wind picks up. The bay, reef and protective structures made from volcanic rock showcase different aspects of the same stretch of coast.
Nature
Crystal-clear lagoons lie around the Faro del Tostón. Reefs protect these stretches of water, which are suitable for safe family swimming. The different coastal areas can be compared for daily planning according to calm swimming and other activities. Alongside La Concha Bay, the lagoons therefore represent another type of coastline, with their own water profile and spatial character.
Water sports
In El Cotillo, there are numerous businesses and surf schools for surfing, kitesurfing, paddle surfing, windsurfing and wing foiling. Numerous spots for these water sports can be reached from El Cotillo: south of the town, on the east coast beyond the Faro del Tostón, on the north coast and in the natural lagoons, where calm navigation is also possible. The five disciplines and the various spot locations can be compared for trip planning by sport and location. The geographical distribution thus extends from the coastal sections south, north and east of the town to the sheltered lagoons.
Culture
The Faro del Tostón preserves the structures of three lighthouses established successively in 1897, 1955 and 1986. The Faro del Tostón houses the Museo de la Pesca Tradicional, which provides insights into the sustainable fishing methods practised by the people of Majorero for centuries.
The Conjunto de Cinco Hornos de Cal de El Cotillo is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Sitio Etnológico category and is located on the cliff of El Cotillo in the town centre. The five lime kilns form a historically significant group in a landscape and natural setting of exceptional value.
The Castillo del Tostón is a two-storey circular building. A stone staircase leads to a drawbridge with iron chains. The annual Fiestas in honour of Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje in El Cotillo include a nighttime procession through the town followed by a boat trip. Architectural landmarks, a museum, festival tradition and the history of the lighthouses thus stand side by side in the town.
Cuisine
Around the Muellito de El Cotillo and the Muelle de Los Pescadores, numerous restaurants specialising in seafood offer traditional and avant-garde versions of maritime cuisine. The two Muelle mentioned mark the areas around which this seafood-focused dining is described.
Getting there
El Cotillo can be reached by car; there are also bus connections from places such as Corralejo and Puerto del Rosario.
A holiday apartment in Cotillo can be considered for your own planning according to travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions. For choosing a location, quiet lagoons, water sports spots, historic buildings and maritime cuisine are presented as separate focal points.
