Fuerteventura: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Playa de Las Canteras is a three-kilometre-long natural area within the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, extending from the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus to La Puntilla.

Culture and History

Casa de Colón houses a museum with thirteen permanent exhibition rooms, a library and a specialised study centre. The institution is dedicated to the history of the Canary Islands and the archipelago’s relations with America. The building complex also includes the former governor’s house, which Christopher Columbus visited in 1492 during his first voyage to America to request assistance with repairing the caravel La Pinta.

The military camp established on 24 June 1478 developed into Vegueta, the founding district of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The historic district comprises cobbled streets, stately homes, the cathedral, churches and Plaza de Santa Ana. The construction of Plaza de Santa Ana at the beginning of the 16th century shaped the urban development of Vegueta.

Inside Catedral de Santa Ana, Late Gothic and Renaissance styles combine with a neoclassical façade. The cathedral is a National Historic-Artistic Monument. The south tower offers panoramic views over Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; the tower can be reached by lift and via a flight of stairs.

Castillo de La Luz is the oldest defensive fortress in the Canary Islands. Since 2014, it has been the headquarters of the Fundación de Arte y Pensamiento Martín Chirino. History and archaeology come together there with the work of the Canarian sculptor, engraver and draughtsman Martín Chirino.

The permanent exhibition at El Museo Canario is dedicated to Gran Canaria’s indigenous population, the Canarios. In eleven rooms, the museum provides information about the settlement structures, economic activities and burial practices of this indigenous population.

At Pueblo Canario in Parque Doramas, visitors can drink coffee in a typical Canarian courtyard.

Coast and Nature

La Barra is a limestone reef more than 100,000 years old that runs parallel to more than half of Playa de Las Canteras and serves as a natural breakwater. The reef is home to a unique ecosystem with various habitats and a diverse endemic marine flora and fauna.

At Playa de Las Canteras, visitors can swim, take walks on the beach or promenade, enjoy sports and relax with their families. The beach has supervision and lifeguard services, adapted toilets, supervised bathing, an accessible path, tourist information and sports areas.

The Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo covers 27 hectares and showcases the botanical diversity of the Canary Islands as well as endemic species of the Macaronesian region, including those from Madeira, the Azores and Cape Verde. Visitors can walk through laurel forest, thermophilous forest and Canarian pine forest, as well as explore the succulent garden with 2,000 specimens of Crassulaceae.

Cuisine

Mercado de Vegueta is the oldest food market in the Canary Islands. Its stalls selling local produce are complemented by dining establishments offering wines and cheeses from the islands.

Getting Around

Guaguas Municipales covers the urban transport network of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with 40 routes. Guaguas Municipales route 1 operates around the clock between the port and the Teatro. Estación de Guaguas de San Telmo and Intercambiador de Santa Catalina make it easier to transfer between Guaguas Municipales and Global and provide access to taxis.

Global route 60 connects Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with the airport. Boat trips from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria can begin at Puerto de la Luz y de Las Palmas. The port’s passenger facilities include stations for Jet Foil and ferries.
