Corralejo – Coast, Dunes and Volcanic Landscape

Corralejo features an extensive coastline with golden fine-sand beaches along turquoise waters. In the northern part of Parque Natural de Corralejo, next to the large tourist centre of Corralejo, lies the largest dune field in the Canary Islands. The southern part of Parque Natural de Corralejo is characterised by volcanic terrain, with rough ochre- and red-coloured formations.

Landscape and Coast

The Parque Natural de Corralejo is accessed on foot from the car parks along the FV-1; the car must be left in a roadside parking area.

Trails and Island Nature

The section of the Camino Natural de Fuerteventura from Corralejo to La Oliva begins in the centre of Corralejo, at Plaza de Patricio Calero. It is described as the oldest square in Corralejo. The section passes calderas, volcanic cones and other remnants of various eruptions.

Two details are particularly clear when choosing between the routes: the section to La Oliva starts in the town, while access to the nature park at the FV-1 is via car parks and continues on foot. On Lobos, the hiking trail is seven kilometres long; visiting the island also requires travelling by sea from the harbour.

Islote de Lobos can only be reached by sea from the harbour of Corralejo. On Islote de Lobos, old ovens, washhouses, animal pens and cisterns have been preserved as part of a historic ensemble. The hiking trail on Islote de Lobos is seven kilometres long and leads, among other places, to the Salinas de Marrajo and Faro de Martiño. Excursions to Lanzarote are also organised from the harbour of Corralejo.

Water and Excursions

Thanks to the available infrastructure, water sports such as diving, windsurfing and water skiing can be enjoyed in Corralejo. Acua Water Park, the only water park on Fuerteventura, is located in the tourist centre of Corralejo. It has a wave pool with artificially generated waves and a sports pool where water polo is played.

The types of excursions also differ clearly: on land, there are the coast, dunes and volcanic formations; on the water, connections from the harbour lead to Lobos or Lanzarote; and at Acua Water Park, a wave pool and sports pool are available. This makes it possible to organise days separately around nature, island trails or water-based activities.

History and Festivals

Corralejo was not regarded as a fishing port until the 19th century. A mill from Corralejo's former fishing village has been preserved in Plaza de la Molina. The town's history therefore remains visible in a specific location. The Fiestas del Carmen in Corralejo include processions held at sea and on land. The festival programme also includes sports tournaments, competitions, children's workshops, cultural gatherings, musical performances and traditional dance events.
