Valle De Santa Inés – History, Pottery and Viewpoints

Culture, trails and wide-ranging views offer three distinct perspectives on Valle de Santa Inés.

Culture

The Ermita de Santa Inés stands on the Lomo de Santa Inés in the Valle de Santa Inés and has been protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category since 1993. The first records of the chapel date from 1580. The reconstruction work begun in 1669 resulted in the building preserved today. It is a single-nave structure with two doors crowned by semicircular arches made of dressed stone, as well as a gabled roof with Arabic tiles.

The Fiesta de Santa Inés takes place on 21 January in the Valle de Santa Inés and has a local character. In the 16th and 17th centuries, on 21 January in the Ermita de Santa Inés, the Cabildo selected two Regidores Diputados Cadañeros by drawing lots. Traditional pottery in the Valle de Santa Inés includes women and men artisans; the pottery tradition is passed down from generation to generation.

Trails

Stage 4 of the Camino Natural de Fuerteventura from Tefía to Betancuria crosses the Valle de Santa Inés. The Camino Natural leads upstream through the Valle de Santa Inés and reaches the Betancuria Rural Park. The FV-30 is an important access road to the Betancuria Rural Park and connects Valle de Santa Inés with Pájara via Betancuria and Vega del Río Palmas.

Viewpoints and Landscape

On Stage 4 of the Camino Natural de Fuerteventura, the Loma de Tetir offers wide-ranging views over the Valle de Santa Inés, including a greener ravine and several Canary Island date palms (Phoenix canariensis). Palms and tamarisks grow in the cultivated areas in the vicinity of the Valle de Santa Inés.

The Mirador del Valle de Santa Inés has been redesigned and comprehensively rehabilitated; it serves as a viewpoint overlooking the valley. It was designed for use by people with functional limitations, with step-free access and suitable features.

The Mirador de Guise y Ayose lies between Valle de Santa Inés and Betancuria and offers views over the central and northern parts of Fuerteventura. Two sculptures there depict Guise and Ayose, the kings of the two island groups during the era of the indigenous inhabitants. Aguas Verdes extends for approximately six kilometres, with sections characterised by natural pools and sea inlets.
