The Cuevas de Ajuy are designated as a natural monument. In the Cuevas de Ajuy, sedimentary layers emerge that formed in the deep sea during the Cretaceous period and have been dated to between 100 and 150 million years old. Fossil remains of snails and an extinct species of shearwater have been identified. The precise dates and animal finds give this geological subject a clearly defined profile.

Coast and Character of the Village

Ajuy is a small coastal village traditionally shaped by fishing. Playa de Ajuy is 270 metres long and consists of sand, gravel and rounded stones. Hiking

A green hiking route runs between Ajuy and Madre del Agua. A blue hiking route leads through the Barranco de Ajuy to the caves. From Playa de Ajuy, a path climbs along the coastal cliff in the direction of Puerto de La Peña. History

The island's ancient inhabitants, the Mahos, used the Cuevas de Ajuy as a refuge and place of worship. Old lime kilns can be seen along the access path to the Cuevas de Ajuy. The lime kilns are dug into the ground and are up to 12 metres high. On Fuerteventura, lime production was of great importance for many years and reached its peak between the 19th century and the end of the 20th century. Dates and structural dimensions make the historical subjects tangible in different ways: the caves refer to the Mahos, while the lime kilns point to the island's production history.
