Caldereta in Fuerteventura: Culture, Landscape and Holiday Apartments
Caldereta becomes tangible through specific cultural sites and a clearly described landscape. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Los Dolores y San Miguel Arcángel is protected as a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural, BIC) in the Monument category. In La Caldereta, it was fully completed in 1808.
The chapel stands in the hamlet known as Caldereta or Caldera de los Denises, in the lower section of the Barranco de Vallebrón and in the area known as El Palo. The place names themselves bring together several levels: a hamlet with two known names, a barranco and a more specifically identified landscape area. These connections remain closely interlinked when placing the site in context.
Culture
The Barranco de Tinojay is also part of the protected cultural heritage. It is protected as a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural, BIC) in the Archaeological Zone category. In the same barranco, there are depictions of ships in the form of rock engravings, which are regarded as a cultural reference point for the history of the Canary Islands and Fuerteventura.
The two cultural aspects can be distinguished: the archaeological zone describes the protection status of a landscape area, while the depictions of ships as rock engravings form a specific visible motif. Those exploring the history of the place through individual sites can consider these categories separately without conflating their respective meanings.
Landscape
The spatial course of the Barranco de Tinojay begins as the Barranco de Vallebrón on the northeastern slope of Montaña de La Muda. It runs through the Valle de Vallebrón to the level of the village of La Caldereta. The description therefore follows a comprehensible line from the slope through the valley to the village.
La Caldereta also has an agricultural landscape. It includes traditional structures such as gavias, tornas and caños, which were created to make the most comprehensive possible use of rainwater.
For travel planning, these details offer different levels of perspective: cultural sites, landscape areas and traditional structures stand alongside one another.
Festivals
The Fiestas de La Caldereta take place in La Oliva. They include a Fiesta Infantil for children. The celebrations also feature an Asadero Popular, where the community shares traditional food. The festivities therefore bring together an expressly named children’s event and a communal meal as distinct components.
The event details show two different forms of local gathering: the Fiesta Infantil is aimed at children by name, while the Asadero Popular describes the communal sharing of traditional food. For your own planning, these formats can be distinguished by occasion and character.
Activities
One edition of the Los Dolores Night Trail included a 16 km run, a 7 km run and a 7 km walking event. A documented edition of the Los Dolores Night Trail passed through the protected landscape of Vallebrón.
The route details allow for a direct comparison of distance and activity type: two runs stand alongside a walking event, while the protected landscape of Vallebrón forms the stated setting for one edition. The different formats can therefore be considered side by side without combining them into a single experience.
