Valles de Ortega – Culture, Mill and Route 30

Valles de Ortega is home to the Ermita de San Roque, which is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the “Monument” category. It was built in the mid-18th century and is located between the villages of Casillas de Morales and Valles de Ortega in the municipality of Antigua.

Culture

On the road from Valles de Ortega to La Corte stands the Molina de Valles de Ortega, a monument protected as a BIC. The Molina is located at Lomo de Los Gomeros in the centre of Valles de Ortega.

It is the only twelve-winged mill still preserved on Fuerteventura. The Molino de Augusto Ruiz was used for many years to grind grain and make gofio.

San Roque is a local festival in Valles de Ortega, celebrated from 14 to 17 August. The Iglesia de Valles de Ortega y Casillas de Morales is the focal point of the festivities held in honour of San Roque.

Routes

Route 30 (Antigua–Tiscamanita) connects Antigua, Valles de Ortega, Casillas de Morales, Agua de Bueyes and Tiscamanita. Along Route 30, several religious buildings and numerous traditional elements associated with agriculture, such as gavias, enarenados and windmills, can be seen.

Landscape

Along most of Route 30, the landscape is shaped in the west by the hilly relief of ancient mountains belonging to the Parque Rural de Betancuria and in the south by Caldera de Gairía, one of the youngest volcanoes.
