Agua de Bueyes – Hiking Trails, Cultural Landscape and Fiestas

At the outskirts of Agua de Bueyes, the local SL FV 28 hiking trail begins. It climbs to the summit of Morro Rincón del Atajo and then continues together with the SL FV 31 to Vega de Río Palmas.

Hiking and Landscape

The starting point of the SL FV 28 hiking trail is next to a picnic area with a stone shelter as well as tables and wooden benches. The SL FV 31 descends from Morro Jorjado to Agua de Bueyes and continues from there to Vega de Río Palmas. This brings different starting points and directions together: one trail initially gains altitude, while the other reaches the village downhill from Morro Jorjado.

The SL FV 28 is bordered on both sides by small stones and leads across the vegetation-covered Cuesta de la Villa, where tabaiba (Euphorbia balsamifera) is the predominant plant species. Agua de Bueyes lies in a closed hydrographic basin formed by the island’s most recent volcanic eruptions. The village is also surrounded by a traditional cultural landscape of gavias and dry-stone walls. Thus, the trail route, volcanic landscape and agricultural design stand side by side within a closely connected thematic area.

Culture and History

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe in Agua de Bueyes was founded on 28 January 1642 by Doña María Gutiérrez and endowed together with her brother Diego Cabrera León on 18 September 1644. The anonymous oil painting “Adoración de los pastores” is located on the Gospel wall of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.

Historically, Agua de Bueyes was shaped above all by cereal cultivation and the breeding of cochineal insects, also known as Bicho Bolo; numerous dyes were obtained from these insects. The history of the village thus combines agriculture, crafts and the furnishing of the chapel, while the gavias and dry-stone walls visibly accompany this historic cultural landscape.

Festivals and Traditions

The Fiestas de Agua de Bueyes combine tradition, music and devotion in honour of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe; the programme includes traditional games, activities for children, dance events, local sports and the traditional Romería-Ofrenda. Traditionally, the Fiestas of Agua de Bueyes begin with a baking competition in which local residents submit desserts for anonymous judging.
