El Pinar de El Hierro – Landscape, Culture and Holiday Apartments

Culture

The Centro de Interpretación Geológica y del Geoparque is located in the former casino of El Pinar. A visit to the centre is included in the Pasaporte El Hierro. Using display panels, it explains the formation of the island and its main geological features.

The Fiesta de El Pinar is a traditional festival in the village and is also part of the route taken by the Virgen de los Reyes during the Bajada, which takes place every four years. During the festival, the Virgin is carried in a procession from the Church of San Antonio Abad through streets decorated with pine cones.

Landscape

The Mirador de Tanajara offers extensive views over the Mar de Las Calmas. From the same viewpoint, visitors can also look out over the slope of El Julan. This means that both the sea and the distinctive landscape of the slope are visible from one location.

The quiet Playa de La Restinga, with its black volcanic sand, is also located in the municipality of El Pinar. The beach is 50 metres long and 15 metres wide. Playa de La Restinga is suitable for paddle surfing and scuba diving; diving clubs are available at the jetty for these activities.

The Punta Restinga area is also located in the municipality of El Pinar, in front of the fishing harbour of La Restinga at the southern end of the island. It is an underwater lava structure with cliffs, rock faces, sand platforms and caves.

Trails and Nature

In the wider surroundings of El Pinar, the centre of El Julan takes visitors along eight kilometres of routes to the rock engravings of Los Letreros and Los Números. The exhibition rooms in El Julan also explain the economic, cultural and political significance of this place for its former inhabitants.

The Camino de la Virgen runs through the municipalities of Frontera, El Pinar and Valverde as a combination of forest track, road and paved path. Different types of paths and the connection between several municipalities give this route its own sequence of landscapes and spaces.

In the wider surroundings of El Pinar, Hoya del Morcillo is located in a Canary Island pine forest. The recreational area is designated as a proposed starting point for an orienteering course and is also a meeting point for several hiking trails. Rock engravings by the Bimbaches can be found in the Parque Rural de Frontera.
