Frontera: Coast, Forest and Culture

Culture

The Ecomuseo de Guinea offers an approximately 30-minute guided tour featuring a Juaclo, a dwelling of the indigenous inhabitants, as well as four houses furnished with objects and household items from different centuries. It presents Guinea, the oldest settlement in the El Golfo valley, now completely abandoned and reconstructed as a tourist attraction and as a cultural and artistic expression of former life on El Hierro. In addition to the Ecomuseo de Guinea, you can visit the Centro de Recuperación del Lagarto Gigante de El Hierro, which focuses on El Hierro’s endangered endemic giant lizard.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria is the parish church of the municipality of La Frontera and was built in 1818 on the site of an earlier chapel. The Campanario de Joapira is a freestanding bell tower on the volcanic cone of Montaña Joapira and forms part of the church’s processional and religious complex. The Ermita de San Juan Bautista in Las Puntas was designed by Canarian architect Alejandro Beautell and recognised through international architecture prizes and awards. Sabinosa is associated with the production of artisanal wines.

The Bajada de la Virgen de los Reyes takes place every four years on the first Saturday in July and begins at the Ermita de los Reyes.

Nature

The El Golfo valley was formed by erosion following a collapse of the terrain that triggered a major tsunami. El Sabinar is a juniper grove on the La Dehesa plateau, with sabinas shaped by the trade winds, some of which are up to a thousand years old. The Parque Rural de Frontera offers a network of trails, including sections of the PR-EH 1 through the laurel forests of Mencáfete and to the Las Playas and Frontera gulfs.

Coast

Charco de los Sargos is a bathing area in the municipality of Frontera whose distinctive shape was formed by a high cliff and further shaped by the sea into several areas equipped for swimming. El Verodal is a volcanic beach in the municipality of La Frontera with reddish volcanic sand, large lava flows and imposing cliffs in the surrounding area.

Arenas Blancas is a 50-metre-long cove in the Parque Rural de Frontera, whose light-coloured sand consists of seashells brought in by ocean currents and eroded by wave action. Arenas Blancas has no direct public transport: a footpath is required from the car park; alternatively, it can be reached by off-road vehicle. La Maceta consists of three natural bathing pools enhanced by human design.

Night Sky

La Frontera is certified as a Starlight Municipality for the quality of its night sky and its commitment to astrotourism. The Mirador Astronómico Charco Azul has a display showing the constellations visible from there and a post pointing towards Polaris for improved observation.
