Taibique on El Hierro: Fiesta, Church and Trails

Taibique can be explored through its church architecture, festival traditions, geological interpretation and trails through the town and surrounding landscape.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de San Antonio Abad was built in Taibique in 1696. Its rectangular floor plan, single-nave layout and gabled roof are characteristic features of church architecture. The bell tower, separated from the main nave, consists of two sections: the first is square, while the second is octagonal. The octagonal section is topped by a dome and a cross.

The Fiesta de la Cruz de El Pinar continues to involve a rivalry between the districts of Taibique and Las Casas, expressed in the design of their crosses. Every year on 3 May, the processions begin in Taibique and Las Casas. The Fiesta de la Cruz de El Pinar has been recognized as a Site of Cultural Interest.

The Centro de Interpretación Geológica is located in the former Casino de El Pinar in Taibique. The center provides an educational presentation of El Hierro’s geological stages of development and the way the island’s geological resources are used. It also presents the island’s various volcanic products and their traditional craft processing.

Those focusing on culture will encounter three different forms of interpretation in Taibique: sacred architecture, a festival tradition firmly rooted in time, and geological education. This combination makes the subjects comparable without reducing them to a single attraction or a single reason to visit.

The three areas can be given different emphasis depending on the preferred travel period and personal plans.

Trails and Landscape

Stage 4 of the Camino Natural leads into the streets of Taibique and ends at the town’s main square. This stage runs above the Punta de La Restinga – Mar de las Calmas Marine Reserve before continuing to Taibique in the municipality of El Pinar.

Section 5 of the Camino Natural runs between Taibique and Las Casas and reaches the upper area of the Las Playas Natural Monument. From Plaza de Taibique, the connecting road leads to Las Casas; this access route forms part of section 5 of the Camino Natural.

The different trail routes can be organized for personal planning according to town streets, connections or their relationship to the landscape. Cultural stops and geological themes create a different emphasis from a section focused on the coast and nature.

The trails also offer different perspectives: one route places Taibique within a wider trail network, while the other connects the town with Las Casas and the natural area. Personal planning can therefore focus on the town, the connection or the coastal views.

During the descent on section 5, there are views of the coast and the Las Playas Natural Monument.
