Cala d'Or: Beach, Fortress and Harbour
Accommodation in Cala D'or
Cala d’Or can be explored through three distinct features: the beach with its small stretch of fine sand, the fortress of Es Fortí and the natural harbour of Cala Llonga. The coastline, defensive architecture and harbour each offer a different perspective. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Cala d’Or, this variety helps answer an initial question: would you like your holiday to focus mainly on the beach, historical interest or maritime impressions? Your answer will give your search a direction without reducing Cala d’Or to just one type of holiday.

Es Fortí and the town’s history
Es Fortí is located in the Cala Egos district of Cala d’Or and is an 18th-century fortress. The square building is 26 metres wide and has gun ports facing the sea. The original cannons are still there, too. Es Fortí is one of the few military structures of its kind in Mallorca. For visitors interested in defensive architecture, its floor plan, orientation and surviving features are particularly tangible points of interest; the fortress is therefore a clearly defined cultural and historical landmark in the town.
The coast also has several names and historical associations. Caló de ses Dones beach was later called Cala d’Hort and eventually Cala d’Or. The last name came to refer to the surrounding urban development, integrated into the landscape, as well as to the stretch of coast with small coves that extends to Felanitx. The history of the name thus leads from an individual beach to a wider local and coastal context. Cala Gran, also known as Caló Gran, is the largest beach in the tourist centre of Cala d’Or. In the 14th century, Arab ships landed there and devastated Santanyí.
Coastal landscape and harbour character
Low rocky outcrops flank Cala d’Or beach, which ends in a small stretch of fine sand. Beyond it are terraced sunbathing areas covered with sand. If beach days matter to you, this description gives you some concrete points to picture the sandy area and places to sunbathe. The beach can be reached by car or public transport.
Cala Llonga adds another point of interest with its natural harbour: the harbour is also a marina, is one of the most important on the island and is among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. Numerous recreational boats anchor off the beach, and their crews enjoy the quality of the water. The harbour and beach therefore appeal to different interests within Cala d’Or. When planning your holiday, you can consider whether you are more drawn to the bathing area or the town’s maritime side.
Choose a holiday apartment to suit your plans
The specific place names can also help you choose a holiday apartment: Es Fortí is in the Cala Egos district, while Cala Gran is described as the largest beach in the tourist centre. Think about what you would like to shape your stay and use these reference points to guide your search.
