Harbour and coves

Traditional fishing boats known as llaüts can be seen in Portopetro harbour. These typical Mediterranean sailing boats are part of the harbour’s maritime character; the individual boats moored there may vary.

Cala Egos, a small, sheltered cove on a sea inlet, lies near the harbour. South of Portopetro’s natural harbour is Caló de sa Torre. The sandy cove, about 35 metres long and 25 metres wide, consists of two small beach coves with fine sand and shallow water. A low rocky outcrop separates them.

Routes and activities

For a trip to Parc Natural de Mondragó, the route rated easy as R6 goes there from Portopetro and back. It is listed as 2,600 metres and 32 minutes. R7 is also rated easy: it goes from Cala Egos via Portopetro and back to Cala Egos, and is listed as 3,100 metres and 40 minutes. In direct comparison, R6 is 500 metres shorter and takes eight minutes less. These figures provide a practical guide if you want to compare the two routes by distance and time.

Another activity in Portopetro is padel: a court is in operation and open to the whole public. As availability may change, it is advisable to check before visiting.

History and festival traditions

According to historical accounts, Portopetro often provided ships with shelter in bad weather and could accommodate up to a hundred galleys. The name Caló de sa Torre also points to the area’s coastal history: it derives from a 17th-century watchtower that warned the population of pirate attacks along the coast of Mallorca.

The Festes de Sant Joan 2026 took place in Portopetro from 14 to 28 June. The programme for that edition included sporting, musical, traditional and family activities.

Santanyí: market and architecture

Santanyí, the wider destination, also offers its own attractions for a stay. Plaça Major is the centre of Santanyí, where festivals and the market take place. The market is held every Wednesday and Saturday throughout the year. More than 150 stalls are spread across Plaça Major and the surrounding streets; the number may vary. The goods on offer include local produce, clothing and handicrafts. Sobrassada, oil and wine are also among the local products sold at Mercat de Santanyí.

On Plaça Major, the parish church of Sant Andreu stands beside the town hall as one of the square’s two main buildings. It was built from Santanyí stone and houses a monumental Baroque organ from the Dominican monastery in Palma. Construction of the church began on 25 July 1786 and lasted 25 years.

Another historic building is El Roser, Santanyí’s former parish church. It was built in the first half of the 14th century in a transitional style between Romanesque and Gothic. During pirate raids, it regularly served as a refuge for the population and was therefore fortified. La Porta Murada is a gate tower in Santanyí’s 16th-century defensive walls. The town’s narrow streets are also home to several art galleries and artists’ workshops.

Santanyí’s festival calendar also offers various events throughout the year. The Sant Antoni festival takes place on 17 January; traditional bonfires and barbecues are held on the eve, and animals are blessed. The Fira de Santanyí takes place on the third Saturday in October and has an agricultural, artisanal and industrial character. The patron saint’s festival of Sant Andreu on 30 November includes a solemn mass as well as numerous social and cultural activities during the festival week.
