Coast and trails

The PR-AS-4 Cabo de Busto is a hike of approximately 8 kilometres with a low level of difficulty and a duration of around three hours. The route follows high, steep coastal cliffs and includes numerous viewpoints overlooking western Asturias.

The Senda Punta Muyeres is approximately 2.73 kilometres long, has a low level of difficulty and takes around 45 minutes to one hour. It has been awarded the Sendero Azul designation and is of geological, ecological and scenic interest.

The PR-AS 1 / PR-AS 2 Hoces del Esva leads through alder forests into the heart of the Hoces del Esva. Various active tourism activities are also possible in the Valdés municipality, including hiking, surfing, boat trips, mountain biking routes (BTT) and golf.

Playa de Barayo is a sandy beach approximately 700 metres long in the Barayo partial nature reserve, accessible on foot. Archaeological evidence of the early settlement of the northern Iberian Peninsula has been found in the Cabo Busto area, including Acheulean tools made of quartzite such as hand axes, scrapers and points. These tools were used by Homo heidelbergensis more than 300,000 years ago.

Culture and townscapes

The Encuentro de la Naturaleza y la Artesanía takes place every year in Brieves and includes demonstrations of traditional crafts, performances by regional dance groups, the sale of handicraft and agricultural products, as well as exhibitions. Brieves is characterised by stone arches connecting houses with hórreos and paneras. The Torre de Brieves is a 16th-century structure.

La Regalina is an open-air festival at Campo de La Garita near the hermitage of the Virgen de Riégala and includes a procession, traditional dances and a communal meal.

The Barrio de la Pescadería preserves Luarca’s medieval town layout with a labyrinth of narrow streets and white houses. The organ of the Iglesia Parroquial Santa Eulalia de Luarca was classified in 2017 as a Bien de Interés Cultural, meaning an asset of special cultural interest.

The Cementerio de Luarca is located on the La Atalaya promontory, offers views of the sea and cliffs, and is home to the remains of Severo Ochoa. The maritime guild met at the Mesa de Mareantes y Navegantes to discuss maritime matters.

Nature and events

The Descenso Ecológico del Río Esva is a non-competitive river event held in August in the Valle de Paredes. Participants build boats from non-polluting materials, travel down the river and simultaneously remove waste from the banks.

Advance reservation is always required to visit El Parque de la Vida; both guided and unguided visits are offered.

Getting there and transport

Valdés is connected by the A-8 motorway and the N-632 and N-634 roads; Asturias Airport is approximately 53 kilometres away.

Public transport in Valdés includes ALSA buses, local buses, an electric bus between Trevías and Busto and Luarca, taxis and the FEVE railway.
