Culture

San Miguel de Canero was built between 1789 and 1800. The building has a Latin-cross floor plan, a polygonal presbytery, vaulted naves, a portico and an espadaña, meaning a bell gable. It replaced an earlier monastery in the Esva Valley, the Monasterium Sancti Micaelis de Canero. This earlier monastery was founded by Counts Xemeno Xemeniz and Arangoti. Sancho later inherited the monastery and gave it to his brother so that he could include it in the founding endowment of Corias.

The Castro de La Cogocha en Canero is listed in the Inventory of the Cultural Heritage of Asturias under code IPCA-YA-34-039. The Casa del Barco preserves the site of the former ferry service used to cross the Esva before the present-day bridge crossing. Architecture, monastic history and the former river crossing each provide a different emphasis.

Coast

Playa de Cueva near Cueva in Valdés lies at the mouth of the Esva, is shell-shaped and is bounded to the east by the foothills of Cabo Busto. At Cueva in Valdés, it is a 480 m long beach of pebbles and dark sand. It offers parking, lifeguard services during the high season, showers and toilets.

From Caroyas, Playa de Cueva can be reached by car or on foot; there is also a pedestrian access from a car park on a road leading from Caneiru to the beach. For the walk, routes are available along the river or through the forest. This allows the mode of travel and the nature of the route to be considered separately.

Trails

The Camino de la Costa passes through Caneiru. On Stage 10, the 19.7 km route from Viḷḷamouros to Outur passes through Caneiru. On the same stage, the trail descends from El Ventorrillu to the church of San Miguel de Canero and then continues into the Esva Valley.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site “Routes of Santiago de Compostela: Camino Francés and Routes of Northern Spain” comprises a network of almost 1,500 km with coastal, Basque-Navarrese, Liébana and primitive routes.
