Tuiza de Abajo – Mountains, Trails and Holiday Apartment

Tuiza de Abajo is located in the Las Ubiñas-La Mesa Nature Park, which was declared a biosphere reserve in 2012. The Peña Ubiña massif rises in its surroundings, with peaks of more than 2,400 metres. Known as Tuíza Baxo, the settlement is listed among the rural settlements of the parish of Tuíza in this nature park.

Landscape and Nature

Beech forests shape the woodland landscape of the Las Ubiñas-La Mesa Nature Park. There are also stands of oak, birch, chestnut and holly, as well as extensive high-altitude pastures. A proposed geomorphological route through the Peña Ubiña massif approaches Tuíza Baxo after 17 kilometres and offers roadside views of a lateral glacial moraine and a second moraine descending towards the river.

The Villaquemá area was abandoned and used as pastureland. The settlement was moved away from the road and further inland; around 50 metres lay between the road and the first houses. An avalanche destroyed four houses and a hórreo in Tuíza Baxo and claimed four lives.

Trails and Activities

Regulated access to the launch site at Puerto de La Cubilla is via the LE-8 Campumanes–Puerto de La Cubilla road. From Campomanes, the settlements of the Huerna Valley can be reached, including Jomezana, Telledo, Tuiza de Abajo and Tuiza de Arriba.

The PR AS-93 route offers a hiking alternative from Tuiza de Abajo across meadows to Los Campos and onwards to the pass. Classified as a “Sendero de Pequeño Recorrido (P.R.)”, the PR AS-93 “Vuelta Puertos de la Bachota” route was created especially for cyclists and also includes sections suitable for hikers. Along the route, pastures and paths follow a slope to a panoramic view of the Ubiña massif in the area of the Puertos de la Bachota.

Tuíza Baxo is the second stop on an educational avalanche trail. Regulations for the Lena airspace designated Puerto de La Cubilla as a launch site. The same regulations included the El Quempu Valley and the Tuíza Valley; landing zones were designated in areas near Rospaso or Tuíza.

Culture and History

A protected group of stone buildings in Tuiza de Abajo includes houses, a hórreo and a limestone farm building. Tuiza de Abajo also preserves evidence of traditional construction using stone houses and stone farm buildings.

According to oral tradition, stone was brought from the Acebos hermitage to Tuíza Baxo to build the present-day chapel in La Villa. The church of Tuiza de Abajo has a single-nave layout, a projecting presbytery set at a higher level and a porch on the entrance side.

The Caserías de Xuan Cacho in Tuiza Baxo consist of three meadows, each with a barn and a hut, below Axeile by the river.
