Buelles: Natural Monument, Hiking Trails and Architectural Heritage

The Saucedas de Buelles Natural Monument encompasses the riverside formations on both sides of the Deva River between El Mazu, Narganes and Buelles.

Hiking

The Senda del Deva is a circular trail approximately 14.5 kilometres long; the 2.5-kilometre detour to the arboretum is not included. Near Buelles, the route crosses the river via a footbridge. Due to sections along the river involving considerable risk, the Senda del Deva is classified as difficult.

Along the banks of the Deva River, it is possible to hike from Buelles towards El Mazo for more than 20 kilometres through the Saucedas de Buelles. The different thematic aspects can be weighted in various ways when planning your own trip; no fixed sequence of days is specified.

The different distance figures indicate two scales for planning: The circular trail has a clearly defined length, while the riverside hike from Buelles towards El Mazo is described as a considerably more extensive route. Culture

The parish church of San Andrés de Buelles dates from the late 16th or early 17th century and is designed in the Baroque style. Its main chapel is covered by a star vault.

The Casa de Guerra dates from the 17th century. The Baroque building has a rectangular floor plan, two storeys and an attic.

The Casa de La Coteruca, also known as El Coteruco, is a 16th- or 17th-century building in the Renaissance style.

The Casa Escuela de Buelles dates from 1912 and is an example of school architecture funded by Asturian Indiano returnees. It has two single-storey wings for the classrooms and a taller central section that housed the teachers’ residence.

The Casa con Corredor de Buelles dates from the 18th or 19th century and represents a form of vernacular architecture common in western Asturias. Between stone party walls, it has a long wooden corridor with carved wooden railings.

The Casa de D. Florencio Milera was built at the beginning of the 20th century and is an example of how alterations commissioned by Asturian Indiano returnees influenced the traditional appearance of the village.
