Culture and History
A particular highlight is Bueño, also known as Güeñu. The village has a group of very well-preserved hórreos and is considered one of the most important ethnographic ensembles in Asturias. The Centro de Interpretación del Hórreo explains the origins and special features of hórreos in the Atlantic region of the Iberian Peninsula. The facilities include interactive games, a reconstruction of the interior of a hórreo and an audiovisual room.
The Casa de las Artes y las Ciencias is located in the former Palacio de Bueño, also known as Palacio de los Prieto. The building is an example of an Asturian manor house and was later converted. In June 2023, the doors of the Casa de las Artes y las Ciencias reopened and the cultural project Aula de las Matemáticas y la Ciencia was inaugurated.
The Fiestas de San Juan de Mata take place in Bueño in February. The Capilla de San Juan de Mata dates from the 18th century, has a rectangular floor plan and a round-arched portal. The Iglesia de San Nicolás de Tellego dates from the 17th century. Today, only part of the wall and the entrance gate of the Castillo de Doña Urraca remain. The Casa de Hevia-Ponte is considered the finest example of civil architecture in the Ribera de Arriba municipality.
Entrecueves is also one of Ribera de Arriba’s caves and rock shelters with rock art. The Cueva de Entrecueves in Fresneo, in the Ribera de Arriba municipality, is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural and contains a cave with Palaeolithic depictions. It is a gallery system that is very difficult to access.
Nature and Trails
The Paseo de los Hórreos de Güeñu/Bueño runs along the banks of the Nalón through the Zona Especial de Conservación (ZEC) Río Nalón, which is part of the Natura 2000 network.
The Bueño–Peñerudes route begins at the El Llosalín car park in front of Bueño. It can be completed on foot or by bicycle and has a moderate difficulty level. The Monte de Bustello route is a hiking trail of moderate to high difficulty and follows a path lined with chestnut and hazel trees.
Transport
Transport connections include the A-66 motorway, the N-630 and N-634 national roads and the AS-322 regional road; there is also a rail connection.
