Amieva: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
At the Mirador de la Collada, at an altitude of around 800 metres, there is a viewpoint overlooking the Amieva Valley and the western massif of the Picos de Europa. Renting a holiday apartment in Amieva means spending your stay in this municipality.
Nature
The Picos de Europa National Park lists the Red de Toneyu in Amieva as a natural monument. In addition, a karst system carved into the rock by water has galleries up to 600 metres deep and a total of 19 kilometres of passages.
The Olla de San Vicente is a natural pool with emerald-green water. The path along the Dobra River to reach it is easy and 6.5 kilometres long, counting the outward and return journeys.
The Mirador de Cuadapipu has a small recreation area and offers views of the Dobra, the Sella Valley, the Olla de San Vicente and the western massif of the Picos de Europa. From the Collada Barcinera, a route leads through a forest beneath the foothills of Peña Beza to the El Navariego spring and onwards to the Vegabaño mountain pasture; from there, a forest track leads to Soto de Sajambre.
Trails
The path from the Mirador de la Collada to the Chorco de los Lobos is easy; the outward and return journeys cover four kilometres and take approximately three hours.
The Senda de la Jocica begins at the Collado de Angón, follows the middle and upper courses of the Dobra River and initially leads to the La Jocica dam. From La Jocica to Carombo, it follows a narrow hillside path, with the river below the trail.
The Senda del Arcediano was a historic route connecting Asturias and León, passing through Amieva, the Toneyu Valley and over the Portillo de Beza.
The Beyu Pen is an easy circular route covering 5.48 kilometres for the outward and return journeys; it combines Asturian mythology, art, nature and tradition.
Culture
The Camín de La Reina was given its name because Queen Isabella II of Castile used this route during her visit to Cangas de Onís in the mid-19th century.
Pen is a traditional village with stone houses and hórreos. It is home to a hórreo considered the largest in Asturias, with 14 pegollos. Casa Peri in Pen is a defensive late-medieval tower from the 14th century that was converted into a residential building.
Santa María de Mián stands at an elevated location near a now-vanished Neolithic dolmen. It is the oldest religious building in the municipality of Amieva and is already mentioned in a donation to the Church of San Salvador de Oviedo dating from 926. From its rural Romanesque construction phase, the church preserves geometric corbels beneath the eaves and anthropomorphic heads.
The Church of San Román has a baptismal font with a border decorated with sawtooth motifs, which may be associated with the Romanesque period.
Cuisine
The production area of the IGP cheese Queso Los Beyos covers the municipalities of Amieva and Ponga in Asturias, as well as Oseja de Sajambre in León. Queso Los Beyos is a firm, compact cheese without holes; its characteristics vary depending on whether it is made from cow’s, sheep’s or goat’s milk.
At the “Jornadas gastronómicas de la matanza en Amieva y Alto Sella”, local restaurants offer a menu featuring products from the pig slaughter, including liver soup, Pote de berzas, Boroña, pig’s trotters, tripe, Boronzu, tongue, Picadillo and pork loin.
Geographical Location
The N-625 crosses the entire municipality of Amieva from north to south. Sames, the capital of Amieva, is located on the N-625, twelve kilometres from Cangas de Onís.
