Sames in Asturias – Trails, Churches and Mountain Views

Santa María de Mián stands in Sames and is considered the oldest religious building in Amieva.

Culture and History

In the 13th and 14th centuries, Santa María de Mián was converted into a rural Romanesque church; it later suffered a fire. Santa María de Mián is mentioned in a donation by Ramiro II to the Church of San Salvador in Oviedo. Near the church in Sames stands the Casona de los García y Fernández, a house dating from the 16th century. Casa de la Cuesta is included in the Cultural Heritage Inventory of Asturias and bears the code IPCA-EI-03-18.

Trails and Activities

The old local path Camino sacramental o de Misa connects the rural settlements of Vis and Sames through the Boños forest and over the Collado Miranda. Along this path, there are views of the Puente de los Grazos and the valley of the Sella River. One route begins in Sames, leads via Precendi and across the Sella River to the start of the Beyu Pen route, and then continues to the village of Pen. Sames has an equipped area for sport climbing; the four climbing areas in Amieva offer a total of 85 routes of various types. Landscape and Views

Part of the Picos de Europa National Park lies within the municipality of Amieva. The Sierra de Trexeru offers sweeping panoramic views across Amieva. A mountain-bike route leads towards the Mirador de la Collada, which offers views over the gorge of the Dobra River and the Cornión Massif. There is also a climb from Sames to the Mirador de la Collada.
