Culture and History

The Santuario de San Cosme y San Damián is a Baroque Bien de Interés Cultural from the early 18th century that is open to visitors and overlooks the Cuna valley. The Romería de los Santos Mártires Cosme y Damián takes place every year on 27 September. In La Villa, the Palacio del Marqués de Camposagrado is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural.

Bustiello is a miners’ settlement built between 1890 and 1917 by the mining company Sociedad Hullera Española. At the same time, Bustiello forms a planned industrial ensemble comprising a church, a monument, a casino or workers’ centre, a school, a sanatorium, and housing for engineers and workers.

The Centro de Interpretación del Poblado Minero de Bustiello presents the geological, industrial, historical, artistic and heritage-protection context of the settlement. Prior reservation is required for a guided visit to the Centro de Interpretación de Bustiello and its chapel. The tourist facilities of Mieres organise guided visits to the municipality’s museums and interpretation centres from the Centro de Interpretación del Pobláu Minero de Bustiello.

Casa Duró is the oldest civil building in Mieres del Camín and dates from the 17th century. Its exterior is open to visitors; the building is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Historically, Mieres del Camín was an important stopping point on the Camino del Salvador. Pozu Espinos remains open and serves a social and educational function.

The Mieres industrial y más route presents the history of Mieres from the end of the 19th century to the present day through its industrial heritage and its impact on the landscape and society. Folixa na Primavera focuses on seasonal cider, gastronomic activity days and the pastry known as bolla de la folixa.

Nature and Trails

The Espacio Protegido de las Cuencas Mineras covers parts of Mieres and is designated both as a protected landscape and as a special conservation area. The part of the protected area belonging to Mieres comprises the upper Turón valley, with steep slopes, numerous streams and small ravines.

The Aula del Ferrocarril de Loredo explains the history of the Riosa coalfield and its narrow-gauge railway using models and information panels. It is also a stop along a Greenway that follows the former railway line from La Pereda to the Peñamiel tunnel.

A visit to the Museo Costumbrista Benjamín Pumarada can be complemented by a walk through the village of Cenera, where traditional Asturian buildings can be viewed on site. The Vía Verde del Valle de Turón can be used by bicycle or on foot along a route of more than 14 kilometres through the valley. The Ruta del Ferrocarril de Baltasara is an easy cycling route and is also suitable for family outings.

The I.E.S. Bernaldo de Quirós, designated as a museum, and the Aula de Interpretación del Pozu Espinos, also designated as a museum, are located in the vicinity of Mieres. The area around Mieres also contains the Poblado Minero de Bustiello, designated as a museum, the Museo Etnográfico de Gallegos, designated as a museum, and the Núcleo Zoológico El Bosque, designated as a zoo. The Jardines del Ayuntamiento is a designated garden in the vicinity of Mieres.
