Discover Carballo: Culture, Panoramic Views and Cycling Route
The “El Acebo en bicicleta, Route 4” cycling route begins in the village of Carballo and leads to Alto Acebo. Its ascent is 9 km long and has an elevation gain of 650 m. At the CN 4 junction, it turns left towards Las Tiendas; it is also 10 km from the centre of Cangas del Narcea on the AS-213. The starting point is at an altitude of 520 m, while Alto Acebo is at 1,170 m. During the first 3 km, there are panoramic views of the Carballo valley.
Culture
The Church of Santa María de Carbachu is one of the most representative Romanesque churches in Cangas del Narcea. Its semicircular apse has a Gothic window.
The Flórez Valdés Palace is part of the historical heritage. It was rebuilt in 1565 by Gonzalo Fuertes de Cangas and features later additions from the 17th and 18th centuries. Its private chapel was consecrated in 1698 and founded by Antonio Flórez Valdés, the archdeacon of Gordón.
The main altarpiece of Santa María de Carballo is dated to around 1713 and attributed to Antonio López de la Moneda.
For your own consideration, you can view the church, chapel, palace and altarpiece alongside one another as distinct cultural and historical points of reference. The information offers several chronological perspectives without requiring them to form a single construction phase.
Anyone wishing to organise the themes for their own travel planning can consider the route and cultural topics separately and set the order according to their personal interests. The clear separation of the route description, access information and culture makes it easier to divide the planning into suitable sections.
Carballo can be reached via the AS-15 towards Puerto de Leitariegos; at the Las Mestas junction, continue for a further 4 km along the Cibea River on the road towards Genestoso.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Carballo, you can compare travel dates, room categories and cancellation policies on the respective offer pages. Your choice can be guided by your own plans: by the cycling route as well as by a focus on culture or a guided tour.
Other destinations for your own research include Palacio De Naviego, Oballo, Jalón, Genestoso, Castañal, Cangas Del Narcea, Monco and Corias.
Experiences
Guided tours at Bodega Vitheras can be arranged on request.
Carballo offers several clearly distinguishable ways to explore the area: the route to Alto Acebo combines distance, elevation gain and panoramic views; Santa María de Carbachu and the Flórez Valdés Palace represent cultural and historical discoveries, while Bodega Vitheras adds a guided tour. These focal points can be given separate consideration in your own planning. This keeps active, historical and wine-related day activities clear and organised without mixing the themes.
