Coast
The Espasa River marks the boundary between the municipalities of Caravia and Colunga; Playa Espasa is located on this boundary. The 1,150-metre-long beach has fine, ochre-coloured sand. Playa Espasa is suitable for beginner surfers and kite flying.
Those who choose Caravia as a travel destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
There is an area at Playa Arenal de Morís where surfing is frequent.
Trails and Nature
The Arenal de Morís–La Griega route leads to the Trincheras de La Isla, a unique, radially arranged defensive structure in Asturias that was dug into the ground during the Spanish Civil War.
The route to Pico La Forquita passes through a forest of native chestnut and oak trees and reaches viewpoints overlooking the Cantabrian Sea and the Sierra del Sueve.
The characteristic vegetation of the Sierra del Sueve includes beech forests and yew forests. Its representative wildlife includes fallow deer, birds of prey and Asturian horses.
The El Fitu recreation area is the starting point for several routes. On clear days, parts of the Picos de Europa can be seen from there. The recreation area has a large car park. El Fitu can be reached via the AS-260 road, which connects Arriondas with Caravia.
The waterfall can be reached from the trail junction in approximately 15 minutes.
Culture and History
The Ermita de Santa Bárbara in El Valle can be visited and is dedicated to the patron saint of miners. Aurelio de Llano, an important researcher of Asturian folklore and prehistory, was born and lived in El Valle. The Cerracín neighbourhood preserves numerous elements of traditional architecture.
The Castro de Caravia, also known as Picu’l Castru, was a fortified settlement inhabited during the Iron Age between the 4th or 3rd century and the 1st century BC. The site was surrounded by a strong stone wall; traces of Romanisation have also been found.
Architecture and Cuisine
The Casa de los hermanos Prieto is considered the most representative example of the Indianos mansions and an outstanding example of Caravia’s civil architecture.
The Casona de El Francu in Duesos, also known as Caravia la Baja, is an unadorned rural palace complex from the 18th century comprising a main house, agricultural outbuildings and a chapel in the vernacular style.
Villa Concha, at the exit of Prado towards Ribadesella, is a country house in the Indianos architectural tradition, built in the modernist-eclectic style at the beginning of the 20th century.
Villa La Molina de Arriba de Carrales stands next to the parish church of Santiago and is a T-shaped building with historicist influences. Each of its two building sections consists of two floors and a converted attic. The Church of Santiago de Caravia in Carrales dates from the 17th century.
Emberzáu from Caravia is a type of blood sausage mixed with cornmeal and wrapped in cabbage leaves.
