Caravia: Sierra del Sueve, Beaches and Holiday Apartments

The protected landscape area of the Sierra del Sueve also extends into Caravia. On the coast lies Arenal de Morís, an 800-metre-long beach with fine, tan-coloured sand. In Caravia, the natural area and the coast therefore emerge as two distinct starting points for planning your own itinerary.

Nature

The Sierra del Sueve area includes the Sierra del Sueve Special Area of Conservation, with the code ES1200043. The characteristic vegetation of the Sierra del Sueve includes beech forests and yew forests. Its characteristic fauna includes fallow deer, birds of prey and Asturcón horses. The Sierra del Sueve can be reached via the AS-260 regional road from Arriondas to Colunga.

Coast

Trails

The La Forquita y Cerracín route begins in Prado. It reaches the summit of Pico de La Forquita, from which Caravia as well as the coast and beaches of the neighbouring municipalities can be seen. The Picu Castro route begins at the tourist office in Prado and reaches the Castro after approximately 1.1 kilometres. Along its course, it passes the remains of former fluorspar mines. The Arenal de Morís–La Griega route connects the section of the GR-204 with the section of the PR-AS 134. Along part of the Camino de la Costa, the route overlaps with the GR-204; it then continues on a local road towards Prado. History

The fortified settlement known as Picu’l Castru was inhabited during the Iron Age between the 4th or 3rd century and the 1st century BC. The Castro known as Picu’l Castru yielded iron tools, decorated pottery and bronze ornaments, including a horse-shaped brooch that is now kept at the Museo Arqueológico de Asturias. La Beciella was once home to a Templar base and the Benedictine monastery of Santiago. In Prado stands the 18th-century Church of Nuestra Señora de la Consolación.
