Culture

The Church of Santa María de Candanal in the district of Manzaneo is a 19th-century building in the vernacular style. It was burned down during the Spanish Civil War and later rebuilt.

The Les Portielles Chapel has a square floor plan, a ribbed vault and preserves remnants of polychrome decoration. The chapel of the Palacio de Les Portielles in Candanal is under Grade 2 structural protection.

Candanal belongs to the group of the three parishes of Arroes, Pion and Candanal in Villaviciosa, which received the “Exemplary Village of Asturias” award in 2023. In Arroes, Pion and Candanal, the village communities are working together with CTIC Ruraltech to digitise photographs, videos, eyewitness accounts and texts relating to local culture and farming knowledge.

In the valley of Pión and Candanal, apple orchards complement livestock farming and enable the operation of three significant cider houses.

Nature

Cueva del Llovíu lies between Puente Arroes and Peón on the Río España and is the largest known cave in the region in Jurassic limestone. It is designated as a partial nature reserve. The representative fauna of the Cueva del Llovíu partial nature reserve includes protected bats and beetles.

The Río España rises in the district of Roces in the parish of Candanal at an elevation of 132 metres above sea level.

Peña de los Cuatro Jueces is located in the parish of Candanal at an altitude of 662 metres; the municipalities of Villaviciosa, Gijón, Siero and Sariego meet there.

Trails and Traditions

The mills route along the Río España is of low difficulty, has no major changes in elevation and runs mostly along paved paths. The mills along this route are privately owned, and none of them is open to the public.

The path to Peña de los Cuatro Jueces leads through a pine and eucalyptus forest and includes a viewpoint facing Gijón.

A festival is held every year in spring at Peña de los Cuatro Jueces, renewing the traditional gathering of the four municipalities.
