Discover Amandi: Romanesque architecture, river trails and Camino de Santiago routes

The Church of San Juan de Amandi stands as a clear cultural landmark in Amandi. It dates from the first third of the 13th century and is regarded as one of the notable examples of Asturian Romanesque architecture.

Culture

The building has a rectangular floor plan with a single nave, a semicircular apse and a wide portico dating from the 17th century. The apse is decorated with a double row of arcades that adorns the entire chancel area.

Pilgrimage routes

With the Sebrayo–Niévares stage, the Camino de Santiago reaches Amandi and continues there along the road to Infiesto. The Camino Norte de Santiago crosses the Villaviciosa area and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Camino de Santiago also crosses the Puente de San Juan towards La Parra.

River landscapes

On the Amandi–Miyares stage, the route crosses the Fondovil stream and then continues beneath chestnut trees, individual oaks and through a beautiful riverside forest. The stream, groups of trees and riverside forest give the stage a clearly recognisable sequence of landscape elements.

The Senda Fluvial del Río Linares runs from Parque de La Barquerina along a broad, almost level route of approximately 3 km to Amandi. The Senda del Río Linares has three footbridges at the river crossings.

The route along the Río Profundu follows a 7 km section. Along this section are the ruins of more than twenty old watermills in varying states of preservation, surrounded by riverside forest.

The stated distances and the different route characteristics can be compared separately for personal planning. The routes differ not only in length, but also in their form and the landscape along them: riverside forest, river crossings, stream sections, groups of trees and historic mills appear in different combinations. This makes it possible to consider the routes separately according to the preferred focus.

Other routes

The GR108 Travesía Andariega is a hiking crossing between Gijón/Xixón and Amandi. Its Gijón/Xixón–Amandi stage is classified as easy. The route length, width, almost level course and easy classification provide different points of comparison.

History, pilgrimage tradition and waterscapes stand alongside one another as distinct themes. The route along the Río Profundu connects the trail section with the ruins of more than twenty old watermills, while the church description focuses on its architectural form, date and chancel area.
