Culture

The monumental complex of Valdediós is located in the historic Boiges Valley and consists of the Church of San Salvador de Valdediós and the Monastery of Santa María la Real de Valdediós. San Salvador de Valdediós was commissioned by Alfonso III in the 9th century and has a basilica-style layout with three naves. Significant remains of wall paintings have been preserved inside. Since 1985, the church has been considered an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural).

The Monastery of Santa María de Valdediós has a historic organ dating from 1713. Its Neoclassical cloister is considered the largest of the cloisters existing in Asturias.

The Cistercian Monastery of Santa María la Real de Valdediós is associated with the period from the 13th to the 18th century and was founded by Alfonso IX. The Church of Santa María de Valdediós is considered a notable example of Cistercian-Romanesque architecture in Asturias.

History

The Church of San Bartolomé de Pueyes was built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries. It has a rectangular nave and a square chapel. Inside, there is a pointed triumphal arch; above it is a reused window of pre-Romanesque origin. Two undecorated round-arched portals also belong to this church.

There are vague and very old reports of human remains being found together with various metal and ceramic materials in the Cueva de Valdediós. In spring 1928, a Roman villa with attached baths was discovered at the site known as „Ería de la villa“, near the boundary between the parishes of Pueyes and Rozaes.

Routes

The official road cycling loop from Villaviciosa to Gijón leads to the monumental complex of Valdediós and then continues along the road through Pueyes. The road cycling route is 63 kilometres long, moderately difficult, suitable for one day and linear; it runs from Villaviciosa to Gijón/Xixón. The entire cycling route follows paved roads.
