Tramacastilla Del Tena – Trails, Forest and Culture

Tramacastilla de Tena lies among pine forests, oak forests and meadows. The Bosque del Betato, a dense forest of boxwood, beech, oak and hazel trees, is located nearby. Nature and Trails

The Camino Viejo is an old path connecting Tramacastilla de Tena and Saqués. It passes through the Hayedo del Betato beech forest and the Barranco Gorgol gorge. The Senda Circular a Saqués passes the Barranco de Gorgol gorge and descends to Saqués. It is 4.7 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 210 metres and takes approximately 1.5 hours.

A family hike through the Bosque del Betato starts in Tramacastilla de Tena and runs between Tramacastilla de Tena and Piedrafita de Jaca. The Sandiniés–Tramacastilla ornithological route leads from Sandiniés via Picaldiecho to Tramacastilla de Tena. Species mentioned for this route include griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures, black kites, magpies, wallcreepers, house martins, chaffinches and coal tits.

Culture and Tradition

The Romanesque church of Tramacastilla de Tena, dedicated to Saint Martin, dates from the 12th century. The Church of San Martín has a Renaissance altarpiece from the 16th century.

The Ermita de San Juan Bautista is a rectangular building from the late 17th century. It has a Baroque altarpiece from the early 18th century with reliefs of San Juan, San Ramón and San Antonio de Padua.

The patron saint celebrations of the Virgen del Rosario take place on the first weekend of October. The Fiestas de Tramacastilla de Tena in honour of the Virgen del Rosario include a Ronda through the village houses: young people perform the traditional Paloteao dance and offer toasts to their hosts.

Excursions and Activities

The Tren de Tramacastilla departs from a wooden stop at the entrance to Tramacastilla de Tena, next to the municipal car park, and takes visitors from Tramacastilla de Tena to the Ibón de las Paules. The train journey from Tramacastilla to the Ibón takes approximately 50 minutes. To return from the Ibón de las Paules to Tramacastilla, visitors can choose the train or a signposted hiking route.

The cycling tour through the Sierra de La Partacua starts in Tramacastilla de Tena towards Sandiniés, following the route signposted for the La Partacua cross-country skiing station. After approximately 10.5 kilometres, it reaches the La Paul de la Riguala plateau and the Ibón de Tramacastilla. The cycling tour to the Ibón de las Paules leads to the Ibón de Tramacastilla and the La Partacua cross-country skiing station.

The Aramon Formigal ski resort is located near Tramacastilla de Tena. In the wider regional area of the Valle de Tena, the Gállego River offers both sections for free catch-and-release fishing and freely accessible fishing sections.

Horses and Local Insights

Centro Ecuestre El Betato offers horseback rides, riding excursions and beginner riding courses in Tramacastilla de Tena. Its offerings also include horseback excursions through the beech forest, including four-hour excursions to the Ibón de Piedrafita.
