Paracuellos De Jiloca: Castle, Churches and Thermal Park

Castillo de Paracuellos de Jiloca is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) and classified as an archaeological zone forming part of a cultural heritage complex. Some historians identify it with the Castillo de Xiloca mentioned in the Cantar de Mio Cid.

Culture

The Iglesia de San Miguel de Paracuellos de Jiloca is located in the upper part of the town, on a moderately high rocky ledge of the gorge flanking the valley. It was built in the late Mudéjar style. The main altarpiece comprises around twenty panels and impressive canvas doors; it is the work of the Italian master Pietro Morone.

The Iglesia de Santa María is a medieval building that was remodelled at the end of the 17th century and still preserves a Gothic portal made of moulded brick. Inside is an interesting altarpiece attributed to the Italian master Pietro Morone.

The organ of the parish church of San Miguel Arcángel in Paracuellos de Jiloca is an Aragonese Renaissance pipe organ built by Guillaume de Lupe in 1565–1566. It was later altered during the 18th to 20th centuries.

History

At the Valdeherrera archaeological site, the Celtiberian urban centre of Bilbilis II developed after the destruction of the older Celtiberian urban centre of Bilbilis I. Settlement or use continued during the Roman imperial period and in the 3rd and 4th centuries.
