Nature

The Hoces del Jalón are part of the Natura 2000 network and are designated both as a Special Protection Area for birds (ZEPA-ES0000299) and as a Site of Community Importance (LIC-ES2430100). These designations represent two different protection categories within the European network.

Hiking and trails

One specific route is stage 4 of the GR 90.2. It runs from Embid de la Ribera via Paracuellos de la Ribera to Aluenda, is 9.4 kilometres long and takes around three hours. It also includes 425 metres of ascent and 105 metres of descent.

During the stage, the trail crosses the Jalón and climbs to the ruins of the Ermita de San Miguel. From Embid de la Ribera, the GR 90.2 also follows a path alongside the railway in the direction of Paracuellos de la Ribera.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Dones was built in the 16th century in the Mudéjar style. It is catalogued as a “Monumento de Interés Local”, meaning a monument of local interest.

The Parque Escultórico de Embid de la Ribera is located on Cerro de San Miguel. The village is also connected with film history: exterior scenes for the film “Réquiem por un campesino español” were shot in Embid de la Ribera.

The cultural points of reference take different forms: the church building represents architectural history and monument status, the sculpture park represents art in the village, and the film locations represent a connection to film history. These differences complement the time-specific pilgrimages and festivals with further cultural points of reference.

Traditions and dates

In the second week of May, a pilgrimage takes place to Viver de la Sierra in honour of the Archangel Michael. The event combines a religious custom with a clearly named destination outside Embid de la Ribera.

The festivals in honour of Nuestra Señora de los Dones take place on the first weekend of August and last around four days. They include Vaquillas, an orchestra, a Guiñote competition and a fancy-dress competition.
