Bujaraloz: Discover Churches, Festivals and the Saladas

Bujaraloz is a place where architectural history, deeply rooted customs and the history of salt production come together across a range of visitor attractions. The Church of Santiago is particularly striking: its origins can be traced back to the 13th century, while its present form is the result of a major reconstruction of the Gothic church at the end of the 16th century.

Culture and history

During renovations in the 18th century, the Ecce Homo Chapel was opened in the Church of Santiago. The Ermita de la Virgen de las Nieves displays a different architectural style. The building is catalogued as a monument of local interest and has a Latin-cross floor plan with a three-bay nave, transept arms and a chancel. Casa Solanot is regarded as an example of Aragonese secular Mudéjar architecture with Baroque elements.

Another historical connection leads to Martín Cortés de Albácar, who was born in Bujaraloz and is regarded as the author of one of the best-known navigation manuals. The different dates and architectural forms provide an approach through architecture without anticipating the town’s later festival traditions.

Festivals and traditional customs

The festival calendar has its own distinctive features. On 28 August, Bujaraloz celebrates its Fiestas mayores in honour of San Agustín; the local dance tradition has been preserved on this occasion. The traditions preserved during the San Agustín festivities and deeply rooted in Bujaraloz also include the “coplillas de los despertadores”.

On 23 April, a pilgrimage takes place to the Ermita de San Jorge. On 4 August, the celebration of the Virgen de las Nieves is held with the special “baile de la gaita”. The 42-kilometre JAMÓN JAMÓN route offers its own connection between film and tourism. It passes through Monegrillo, La Almolda, Bujaraloz, Peñalba, Candasnos in Bajo Cinca and Pina de Ebro in Ribera Baja del Ebro. The route is signposted with ten explanatory panels.
