Torrente: Holiday apartment between the Cinca, aqueduct and pilgrimage

Culture and history

The Muslim Castillo de Torrente de Cinca protected the settlement and gave Torrente a military function as part of the Muslim defensive line.

The Arab aqueduct of Torrente carries the old irrigation channel across the Vall del Cos gorge, about 20 metres above the bottom. At the Vall del Cos aqueduct, this old irrigation channel runs about 20 metres above the newer irrigation channel.

The portal of the Iglesia de Santa María Magdalena is divided into three axes; its most important decoration is located in the central section.

The Ermita de San Salvador can be stylistically attributed to the late Renaissance. In the mid-16th century, the Discalced Trinitarians took over the Ermita de San Salvador in Torrente de Cinca; the chapel was subsequently expanded several times.

The capillita del santo vaso is associated with the Ermita de San Salvador. A vessel containing miraculous oil is said to have been kept there; according to tradition, King Felipe II is also among the famous cases of healing.

River and nature

The Cinca crosses the municipality of Torrente de Cinca from north to south and flows into the Segre downstream from Torrente.

The Soto contains a lush riparian forest of trees and shrubs. The vegetation lines of these plants develop according to the water requirements of the respective species. The Sotos provide a habitat for numerous birds and other animals, including kingfishers, cormorants and moorhens.

Festivals and pilgrimage

Torrente de Cinca has two patronal festivals: on 17 January in honour of San Antonio Abad and on 6 August in honour of San Salvador.

The San Isidro tradition includes a pilgrimage to the Ermita de San Salvador and a communal meal in its surroundings. At the Ermita-Monasterio de San Salvador, the pilgrimage and Mass in honour of San Isidro Labrador have been celebrated without interruption.

The celebrations for San Salvador include street performances, water parks and dancing outdoors.

Active pursuits

The Descenso del Cinca is a canoeing event held in several editions that traverses a section of river between Fraga, Torrente de Cinca and Mequinenza.

Exit 4 of the AP-2 is 2 kilometres from Torrente de Cinca; the A-2 can be reached directly via the N-211, 4 kilometres away.

The different points of focus can be weighted separately when planning a trip: architectural heritage and pilgrimage stand alongside river nature, festival dates and a canoeing event.
