Discover Arto: Serrablo Churches and the Gállego River

Arto makes history visible in a specific place: the Iglesia de San Martín in Artó is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of Monument. It was originally built as a church in the late 11th century.

Culture and history

Its original layout consisted of a rectangular hall and a semicircular apse. Two wall arcades have been preserved on the outside of the apse, including the central one with an opening. In addition to its protected status and date of construction, these structural details give the church a clearly recognizable architectural profile.

Casa Lafragüeta offers another architectural detail: the building has doors with wedge-shaped voussoirs and roofs with large, truncated-cone-shaped chimneys. Chimneys of this form are widespread throughout the Pyrenees. In Arto, 23 September is regarded as a feast day.
