Culture and History

The parish church of Bierge is dedicated to the apostle Santiago Apóstol and dates from the 16th century. Its construction follows the Aragonese Gothic style and stands above the remains of earlier Romanesque walls. The Ermita de San Fructuoso was built in the 13th century and renovated in the 16th century; the Ermita de San Pedro dates from 1698. Bierge's main festival, in honour of San Pedro de Verona, takes place on 29 April.

Nature and Setting

The nature interpretation centre is located on a hill beside the centre of Bierge. It offers an exhibition and an audiovisual presentation about the Parque de la Sierra y Cañones de Guara and its natural and cultural values. Another perspective on the landscape is offered by the route between Bierge and Morrano: it runs through a specially protected zone without entering the Parque de la Sierra y los Cañones de Guara.

Hikes by the Water

For personal day planning, a circular route, river crossings and a connection between two places can be considered as different types of trails. The Puente de las Aguas route reaches the confluence of the Isuala and Alcanadre rivers and the remains of the Las Aguas bridge. On the San Martín route, the Alcanadre must be crossed at numerous points. The route between Bierge and Morrano presents neither technical nor physical difficulties. As a circular route, the Vuelta al Río Alcanadre passes through the area around the Alcanadre River.

Experiences at the Salto

Canyoning and gorge abseiling continue to be among the visitor attractions in the Bierge area. The Natural II route is signposted between Pedruel and Bierge. It follows the Alcanadre River, passes the Fuente de Tamara and then reaches the Salto de Bierge. At the Salto de Bierge, there is a pool in the Alcanadre River. In summer, the Salto attracts swimmers because a backwater forms upstream of the weir.

At the Salto de Bierge, the power station building has separate toilets for men and women, as well as low-barrier toilets for people with reduced mobility. A half-day route travelled exclusively on foot begins at the Salto de Bierge hostel.
