Rodellar between Gorge Trails and Cultural Heritage Sites

Landscape and Trails

Near the abandoned village of Letosa, the GR 1 runs along the left orographic side of the Mascún Gorge towards Rodellar, offering views of the geological formations shaped there. The Vuelta al Mascún trail follows the rock ledges running high above the valley on both sides of the riverbed and offers numerous natural viewpoints over the gorge. The Real de Mascún route leads from La Honguera to the Mascún riverbed and reaches the Mascún spring, where hikers can draw water. For planning purposes, the trails can be distinguished by terrain, connection to the river and viewpoints.

Nature

The Catedrales de Roca trail runs entirely along rocky paths in the Sierra y los Cañones de Guara Nature Park. It follows the riverbeds of the Mascún and Alcanadre and passes through several picturesque abandoned villages. The route to the Dolmen de Losa Mora runs entirely through a rocky landscape. The wallcreeper (Tichodroma muraria) is considered the characteristic bird of this route. The available trails therefore differ in terrain, connections to the rivers and cultural destinations.

Culture and History

The Castillo de los Marqueses de Torres in Rodellar is one of the castles in Aragón classified as Bienes de Interés Cultural. From Rodellar, the Real de Mascún route leads to the megalithic tomb Dolmen de Losa Mora. The Romanesque church of Nasarre, classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural, can be reached via a branch of the Real de Mascún route.

The Church of San Andrés de Nasarre is located in the now-abandoned village of Nasarre; its beautiful and recommended route begins in the La Honguera district of Rodellar. It lies at an altitude of 1,199 metres and is dedicated to the apostle San Andrés. The route to the Virgen del Castillo runs along extensive dry-stone walls without mortar, which line both sides of the path and the edges of former cultivated fields. The oldest part of the Virgen del Castillo hermitage is its 12th-century apse.

Climbing

The Rodellar climbing area comprises more than 400 routes in 35 sectors of all orientations; all sectors are easily accessible on foot from Rodellar. The area consists of limestone with large rock roofs and overhangs, caves and technical vertical routes of 40 metres and more. The Espolón de la Virgen del Castillo via ferrata in Rodellar is one of two via ferratas in Somontano suitable for beginners. The climbing options can be distinguished by the variety of sectors, terrain and technical character.
