Discover Olsón: Castle Ruins, Culture and PR-HU 159
Above the settlement of Olsón stand the remains of Castillo de Olsón on a rocky outcrop; from there, the view extends across the entire valley. In the same village setting stands the Iglesia de Santa Eulalia, built in 1546 by the master builder Joan Tellet. Olsón’s church is nicknamed “La Catedral”.
Culture
The Cruz de San Antón depicts Christ crucified on its eastern side and a praying Virgin on the opposite side. The Pozo de hielo de San Benito/Pinar de O Pozo de Olsón is one of the ice houses protected in Aragón as Bienes de Interés Cultural.
The village landscape also includes conical chimneys with Espantabrujas, a characteristic feature of Olsón’s vernacular architecture. All the elements have been preserved in the local oil mill. Thus, in a comparatively small village, ecclesiastical art, an ice house, traditional architecture and an oil mill in which all the elements have been preserved stand side by side.
Landscape
The peaks of Tozal de Asba, Santa Bárbara and Platiello lie in the surroundings of Olsón. The three names mark different points in the immediate vicinity of the village and complement the view from the rocky outcrop of Castillo de Olsón with further landscape references. For geographical orientation, the village centre, its surroundings and the wider regional area can therefore be considered separately.
Hiking
The PR-HU 159 follows a traditional path downhill to Olsón. The route to Olsón is listed as 13 kilometres long, with a duration of 4 hours and 25 minutes. It is described as a point-to-point route and includes 550 metres of elevation gain and 505 metres of descent.
For your own planning, several details of this route can be considered together: the total length, the stated duration, its point-to-point character and the two elevation figures. None of these details replaces the others; together, they describe the route more precisely than any single figure.
Surroundings
In the immediate vicinity of Olsón is the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, listed as a monument. In the wider regional area lie the ruins of Restos De Tejeria. The Museo Diocesano Barbastro-Monzón and the Museo Mártires Claretianos are also located there. The selection of named destinations therefore ranges from a monument in the surroundings to ruins and two museums in the wider regional area.
For a stay in Olsón, you can compare a holiday apartment based on your travel dates, preferred accommodation category and cancellation conditions. These details are part of the individual selection and stand alongside the named local destinations, built heritage and route information, without changing their character or scope.
Other local pages in the same broader area include: Castejón De Sos, Bonansa, Castillazuelo, Buera, Sariñena, Coscojuela De Sobrarbe, La Puebla De Castro and Torres de Barbués.
