Discover Tolva: Landscapes, History and Holiday Apartments

Traditional architecture is considered Tolva’s main tourist attraction, particularly the Plaza Mayor. For planning purposes, Tolva can be viewed from three perspectives side by side: the townscape, its architectural history and the routes through the landscape.

Culture and History

The Castillo de Falces was commissioned in 1062 by Ramiro I from the brothers Agila de Falces. The commission was intended to defend the borders of Ribagorza and resettle the area.

The layout of Tolva, with three main streets and two squares—one in the lower part and one in the upper part—reflects the town’s defensive past; several entrances to the main area have been preserved.

The Ermita de Santa Anastasia has a rectangular floor plan, a single-nave layout, flat chapels between the side buttresses and a polygonal chancel. It stands on the western edge of Tolva’s town centre, next to the access road.

The ruins of the Castillo de Falces lie on a rocky ridge accessible via a forest track.

Routes and Landscape

The GR 18 Senderos por La Ribagorza long-distance trail passes through Tolva. The municipality of Tolva also has routes and paths for walks without major difficulties, suitable for half-day excursions.

The Congosto del Cajigar is a narrow passage carved out by the river erosion of the Cajigar River. The Congosto de Cajigar is approximately two kilometres long and has an elevation difference of around 50 metres.

Access to the Congosto de Cajigar begins near the Barranco Seco close to Tolva. The vehicle must then be parked, and you continue on foot upstream along the ravine.

At the Congosto, access by vehicle followed by a walk therefore contrasts with a route through the municipality and easier walking paths.

The different route formats give you several ways to compare the time required and the type of activity objectively. The routes also offer different types of activity: long-distance hiking, walks and access to a gorge. Route length and excursion duration provide different benchmarks for assessing the time involved.

The town structure and buildings form a different focus from the landscape routes. You can devote a day more to architecture and history or place movement and nature at the forefront; the different themes remain clearly distinguishable from one another.

Geographical Context

The route of the N-230 national road gives Tolva a fast connection with towns such as Benabarre.

When preparing the trip, you can assess a holiday apartment in Tolva based on your travel dates, the desired room category and the applicable cancellation conditions. This information belongs to the individual selection and stands alongside the town’s different themes: architecture and history on the one hand, and the long-distance trail, walking paths and gorge access on the other. This keeps the accommodation question separate from the described characteristics of the town and landscape.
