Culture and History

The Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor is located on Tamarite de Litera’s Plaza Mayor. It is a Romanesque church from the 12th century with transitional elements towards the Gothic style. The Castillo de Tamarite is attributed to the beginnings of Muslim rule and is thought to date from the 11th or 12th century. Its irregular layout has a maximum longitudinal axis of approximately 100 metres; in addition, there are three topographically staggered enclosures and an albarrana tower.

La Vispesa lies within the municipality of Tamarite de Litera, on a 304-metre-high hill between the Segre and Cinca rivers. The area was inhabited from the Palaeolithic to the Roman Imperial period. A traditional Cabañera also runs through the urban area of Tamarite de Litera, along which transhumant herds move towards the high mountain pastures.
