Centenero: Holiday Apartment, Culture and Views of the Pyrenees

Centenero is part of the San Juan de la Peña Cultural Park. The village is laid out around a main street, giving it a clearly recognizable, cohesive structure. This distinctive feature complements the landscape and cultural highlights in Centenero itself and in its surroundings. This makes it possible to distinguish the impressions of the village, the views and the named buildings from one another.

Nature

From Centenero, there is a view of the rock massif of San Juan de la Peña. The ascent from Centenero to the Ermita de Santa Isabel offers views of the Pyrenees. Both details connect the village with different landscapes: on the one hand, the nearby rock massif is in view; on the other, the ascent opens up views towards the Pyrenees.

The GR-95, also known as the Sendero de la Calzada Romana, runs near Centenero at Ena. The Mirador de los Buitres viewpoint is located in the surroundings of Centenero. Thus, a named route near Ena and an explicitly named viewpoint are recorded as separate landscape references; they should not be equated with the ascent to the Ermita de Santa Isabel or the view of the rock massif.

Culture

Centenero has characteristic cone-shaped chimneys (“chamineras”) with protective elements known as “espantabrujas”. Their distinctive shape and the associated name make these chimneys a striking detail of the villagescape. Casa Simón dates from the 18th century and complements the local architectural details with a building whose period is clearly specified.

Loarre Castle is located in the surroundings of Centenero. The Monasterio Nuevo de San Juan de la Peña and the Monasterio de San Juan de la Peña are also located in the surroundings of Centenero. The three names represent separate destinations in the area: Loarre Castle and the two differently named monasteries of San Juan de la Peña. Their full names help distinguish the individual sites from one another.
