Nature and Trails

Arguis lies at the entrance to the Parque Natural de la Sierra y los Cañones de Guara. The official Arguis–Belsué–Nocito route connects nature, art and enduring traces of human settlement on the northern side of the Sierra de Guara. For planning a day, landscapes, culture and active pursuits can be considered as different focal points alongside one another.

The Centro de Interpretación del Parque Natural de la Sierra y los Cañones de Guara is located in a former forestry building at the Arguis Reservoir. The hike from the Centro de Interpretación de Arguis to Pico del Águila is 5.3 kilometres long and takes approximately 5 hours and 5 minutes. It ends at viewpoints with views of the central and western Pyrenees and the Ebro Valley.

The Sierra de Bonés and Ermita de la Malena trail passes through contrasting vegetation. On the sunny side, boxwood and holm oak scrub grows, while the shady side is covered by mixed beech and Scots pine forest. The trail ends at the Ermita de la Magdalena, a chapel dating from the 16th to the 18th century. Another route passes through a dense beech forest considered the southernmost beech forest in the province of Huesca. The Hayedo de Peiró is protected as the Zona Especial de Conservación (ZEC) Monte Peiró-Arguis.

Water and Active Experiences

The Arguis Reservoir was built in 1704. Today, it offers a significant and popular fishing area for brown trout, rainbow trout and black bass. Its calm, clear waters can also be explored by canoe. Canoeing, hiking and viewpoints represent different thematic focal points.

The fourth stage of the Camino Natural de la Hoya de Huesca ends in Arguis after crossing the Sierra de Gratal. It offers panoramic views of the Hoya de Huesca, the Sierra de Gratal, the Sierra de Bonés and the Pyrenees. On the Camino Natural to Arguis, the Isuela River is crossed at two points; depending on the water level, these crossings may be unusable.

The Perimetrail de Arguis takes place every year in two trail-running variants and passes through notable locations in Arguis and its surroundings. Culture and History

The parish church of San Miguel in Arguis is Romanesque in style and dates from the 12th century; it was remodelled in the 16th century. A 15th-century altarpiece from this parish church can be seen in the Museo del Prado. The village’s stone houses also have a characteristic detail: their traditional chimneys are topped by so-called Espantabrujas or Chamineras.

In Las Calmas in the Sierra de Gratal, there is an exceptional group of eight snow wells. They were used to store and sell snow. The snow wells were built to supply Huesca and the nearby settlements with snow. The Reunión Invernal de Arguis has taken place continuously since 1974.
