History
La Campana is part of the Comarca de Écija destination. In Roman times, an urban settlement was located on the site of present-day La Campana. Archaeological remains suggest that the origins of La Campana date back to the period before the Bronze Age.
The 18th century was La Campana’s heyday. This period was associated with the Marquesado de Villanueva del Río and the House of Alba and left behind manor houses in the historic centre. The historic buildings therefore belong to the period in which the development of the town became particularly visible.
Tradition
The Romería de la Virgen de Fátima takes place every year around 13 May.
Religious Buildings
The Church of Santa María la Blanca is a Neoclassical religious building whose origins date back to the 15th century. Its interior contains decorative elements, sculptures and paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries. In addition to its architectural history, it has furnishings that make several historical periods visible within the same church interior.
The Ermita de San Lorenzo has an 18th-century tiled dado. The chapel contains a 16th-century crucifix and also has a dome decorated with stucco work. The tiled dado, crucifix and dome define the chapel’s aforementioned distinctive features.
Landscape and Trails
La Campana is surrounded by olive groves, cereal fields and livestock farms. Parque de la Atalaya has a picnic area and paths for walking. A longer route is provided by Stage 09 of the Camino de la Frontera to La Campana: it is 24 km long, linear and easy. The landscape therefore offers both short paths in the park and a clearly described longer route.
Getting There
La Campana has no railway station. It is possible to travel by bus from the Plaza de Armas bus station in Seville.
Cuisine
Empanada campanera consists of an egg-based pastry filled with sugar, cinnamon and sesame. The combination of the sweet filling and the egg-based pastry is part of the characteristic description of this local speciality.
During the hunting season, traditional dishes with partridge and rabbit are prepared; empanada campanera is mentioned as a dessert.
