Guadalcanal lies within Sierra Norte Nature Park, which has been recognized by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve. The mid-mountain landscape combines extensive dehesas with forests of holm oaks, cork oaks, Portuguese oaks, chestnut trees, pine trees, elms and olive trees. La Capitana reaches 959 meters and is the highest point in the Sierra Norte de Sevilla. Guadalcanal therefore brings together distinctive landscapes and a multifaceted architectural and cultural history.

Culture and history

The Mudéjar style predominates among Guadalcanal’s buildings and significant monuments. La Almona was used to store grain and is considered one of the best-preserved examples of late-medieval civil architecture in Andalusia. The building is dated to 1307 and described as the oldest civil building in Seville province.

The Convento del Espíritu Santo comprises a church with a Latin-cross floor plan and an extensive Tuscan-order cloister. The Iglesia de Santa Ana houses the Sierra Morena de Sevilla Interpretation Centre. It is also considered the oldest church in Guadalcanal; in 1979, it was declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument.

The historic center of Guadalcanal is listed as part of Andalusia’s Historic and Artistic Heritage; the designation is recorded in BOE 103 dated April 28, 2004. Other historical traces include the Minas de Pozo Rico de Guadalcanal. They are described as Spain’s first mining reserve in the 16th century and were known for their wealth of silver around 1555.

Nature and stars

The Mirador de la Capitana route is 12 kilometers long, calculated for the round trip. It takes approximately 1 hour and 14 minutes and is classified as easy. The La Capitana viewpoint is suitable for birdwatching and offers views of the landscape of southern Extremadura as well as the mountains and hills of the Sierra Morena de Sevilla.

Guadalcanal is certified as a Starlight Municipality and is suitable for astronomy and stargazing. In addition to the mid-mountain landscape and the viewpoints mentioned above, the nighttime conditions for observing the sky are therefore another distinctive aspect of the town.

Getting there

From Seville, Guadalcanal can be reached by car via the A-432 through Cazalla de la Sierra and Alanís, or via the A-66, the Autovía de la Ruta de la Plata. For traveling by train, Seville’s Santa Justa station is listed; for bus travel, the Estación de Plaza de Armas.

Regional specialties

Guadalcanal’s culinary specialties include traditionally produced chacinas and Iberian ham, as well as calderetas and game-meat stews, migas with chorizo and traditionally prepared gazpacho.
