Mijas: History, Nature and Unique Discoveries

Mijas begins at a place where history can be read in tangible form: the former settlement core stood on the site of today’s Jardines de La Muralla. Historical documents from 1492 mention a fortress there with a tower and a mosque.

History and Culture

The historic centre of Mijas was declared a historic-artistic ensemble in 1969. It preserves a layout of Arab origin; whitewashed streets offer views of the Mediterranean.

The Mijas bullring was built in 1900 at the request of a group of residents and set into the rock. Its oval shape is considered one of the few of its kind in Spain.

The Casa Museo opened in June 1995 in the building of Mijas’s former town hall. It illustrates the Mijas of the past with agricultural and fishing equipment, oil mills, a wine cellar, a typical Mijas kitchen and local handicrafts. The local festivals take place in the first half of September, particularly on 8 September, in honour of the patron saint, the Virgen de la Peña.

Nature and Trails

The Sierra de Mijas is a limestone mountain range running parallel to the coast and forms a species-rich natural balcony overlooking the Mediterranean.

Around Pico Mijas, visitors can observe, among other species, kestrels, golden eagles and short-toed snake eagles.

The Ruta Botánica covers 12,875 square metres and contains various native plant species from the province of Málaga, as well as a total of 140 species from all continents.

Along the network of self-guided hiking trails, information boards provide information about nature, culture and ethnology. This brings together trails of varying lengths, nature observation and cultural-historical topics.

Art and Unique Discoveries

On the Ruta de los Artesanos, visitors can discover workshops where craftspeople demonstrate how unique objects are made.

The collection of the Carromato de Mijas was presented in 1972 when the exhibition house opened, with around 360 miniatures. Many miniatures are displayed using magnifying glasses and optical magnification systems.

The Ruta Selfie de Mijas comprises 15 special locations within the municipality, marked with small yellow plaques. In addition, three nighttime points are highlighted for their nocturnal lighting and exceptional beauty.

The permanent exhibition of CAC Mijas was intended to bring together primarily around 70 works by Pablo Ruiz Picasso and Salvador Dalí. CAC Mijas regularly offers art workshops for children as well as discussion and lecture series on art and culture.
