Benamocarra: Culture, Landscape and Music in the Axarquía

Benamocarra features a landscape that combines olive, almond and grape cultivation with subtropical fruit crops as well as orange and lemon groves. The town centre preserves a Moorish-influenced layout with irregular streets, former adarves, whitewashed houses and courtyards with arched entrances. Culture and History

The Iglesia de Santa Ana dates from the late 16th century and is under comprehensive architectural protection in Benamocarra. It has three naves; above the main nave is an octagonal Mudéjar-style roof structure. The exterior tower has a rectangular floor plan and follows the Mudéjar architectural type.

Santo Chiquito is a small chapel that is not equipped for worship; inside is a small mosaic image of Christ. The Fuente de Los Caños was built around a spring behind an Arab arch that is now covered and has three spouts. As a washing place, it was also a customary meeting point for the community.

Noria de San Marcos is listed in a heritage register as an element of medieval tradition. Casa Natal Eduardo Ocón is listed in a heritage register of Benamocarra under the category “Contemporánea” with the entry “PEI”. The birthplace of the composer Eduardo Ocón Rivas in Benamocarra is now a museum. A mill dating from the late 18th century has been converted into a museum and includes millstones, a courtyard, cellars and several rooms.

Music and Routes

Día de la Música takes place every September in honour of the local composer Eduardo Ocón Rivas (1833–1901); it is recognised as a festival of provincial tourist interest and is considered a festival of special tourist significance for the province. The festival includes rondalla groups, Pandas de Verdiales and classical music concerts. Typical dishes and other traditional specialities of the municipality are also sampled.

Nature

The Cerro de la Jaula offers panoramic views of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama, the Mediterranean Sea and Los Montes de Málaga Natural Park.

By car, Benamocarra can be reached via the A7 to the Vélez-Málaga exit; from there, the MA-3115 continues to Benamocarra. A bus route connected Benamocarra with Vélez-Málaga and Torre del Mar.
