Almogía – Culture, Nature and Trails

Almogía’s history is particularly vividly illustrated by the Castillo de Almogía: it stands on a steep promontory at the southwestern edge of the compact built-up area. The Castillo de Almogía had a total of seven towers. Due to its strategic location within the complex, the Torre de la Vela is dated to the Nasrid period between the 13th and 14th centuries.

Culture

The church was built in 1552 over a mosque that disappeared after the Reconquista; its nave features a Mudéjar coffered ceiling of high artistic value. An archaeological site near Almogía contains prehistoric paintings. The washhouse, built in the 19th century, is also part of the town’s history. It was used until 1990 and consists of around thirty earthenware washbasins with washing stones arranged around a water basin.

Nature

The Almogía–Santi Petri route begins in Almogía and leads to Cerro Santi Petri, the highest point in the municipality at 798 m. From Cerro Santi Petri, the route offers a 360-degree panorama. It passes along paths with native vegetation and offers the opportunity to observe Spanish ibex and various birds of prey.

The Verdiales style of Almogía originated among the rural population in the area surrounding Almogía. At Verdiales events, groups representing the three styles of Almogía, Montes and Comares perform. An event held in Almogía that is recognised as a Fiesta Singular and is of tourist interest to the Province of Málaga takes place there.

Cuisine

Traditional Almogía cuisine includes Chanfaina, a dish made with goat meat seasoned with almonds. The programme of events includes presentations of local products with tastings of Chanfaina, cheese, almond pastries, desserts and wines from the region.
