Tolox: Nature, Trails and Culture

Two thirds of the municipality of Tolox lie within the Sierra de las Nieves National Park. La Torrecilla, the highest peak in western Andalusia, is located within the municipality. The Sierra de Tolox viewpoint offers 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding area, from the main peaks of the Sierra de las Nieves mountain range to the Guadalhorce Valley.

Nature

On the slopes of Cerro Corona lies one of the national park’s most significant Spanish fir forests; it is accessible from the Cañada de las Carnicerías. The Botánico de las Peridotitas is a 717-metre circular trail with little incline and is suitable for families.

The three natural sites each have a different focus: at Cerro Corona, the Spanish fir forest is the main attraction; the Botánico de las Peridotitas follows a short circular trail; and the viewpoint opens up views across the Sierra de las Nieves to the Guadalhorce Valley.

Trails and Water

The SL-A 238 Virgen de las Nieves trail is a classic route from Tolox to the recreation area at the Ermita de la Virgen de las Nieves. The recreation area is located in a pine forest equipped with benches, tables and fountains. At Charco de la Virgen, a waterfall cascades into a pool that is frequented by canyoning enthusiasts and bathers in summer.

Culture and History

The Balneario de Tolox opened in 1869 and specialises exclusively in respiratory conditions; its water releases a gas used for inhalation. The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel was built in 1505 in the Gothic-Mudéjar style. Art Tolox is a free open-air museum in Tolox; the works were donated to the municipality, and the museum is open 365 days a year.

The architectural heritage, art venue and spa can be viewed as different cultural focal points.

Festivals and Local Mosto

Tolox’s Cohetá takes place every year on 16 August in honour of the patron saint San Roque and includes a procession accompanied by thousands of rockets. The Festival Folclórico Villa de Tolox has taken place every year since 1993 in the first half of July at Plaza Alta. At the Cata de Mosto de Tolox, local mosto producers select their best mostos, which then compete to be chosen as the best mosto of the harvest.
